With its ability to safely perform under high temperature demands, the battery is a natural  fit for many industries, including oil & gas and oilfield services. The battery’s compact nature, low self-discharge, tolerance for high temperatures (150°C or 300°F) and ability to withstand harsh environments allow for providing a remote energy source for many of the applications found in exploration, extraction and refining. For example, JBT has been engaged by BP to design a battery for a pressure temperature gauge. We have also been approached about developing a battery to be used in a sensor for the monitoring of oilfield cement curing.

Oil & Gas Industries

Due to recent events, there is a need to use safer, non-exploding battery technologies in oilfield applications. In addition, JBT battery technology will afford the oil and gas industry easier access to remote locations and to perform actions that are difficult in today’s harsh environments.

Another essential factor for all industries is to reduce costs and streamline staffing needs. The current battery technologies available need to be replaced or maintained often, which requires significant maintenance, staffing costs and downtime. Battery failures, if maintenance is not performed frequently, add significant risk to safety and  efficiency of operations. This is especially true for devices requiring power sources in remote  locations. JBT solid-state batteries can be custom designed by application to last longer and require little maintenance, which means the exploration, extraction and refining processes don’t need to be compromised as frequently.

There are several key benefits that are specifically viable and necessary for the oil and gas industry, including the ability to withstand temperatures up to 150°C (300°F). Because safety is also a critical concern, JBT batteries can safely address the risk of explosion because there are no liquid or gel electrolytes. This positively affects potential  liability for oil & gas companies by reducing safety and disaster risks.

JBT technologies can additionally withstand higher and lower voltages than most conventional batteries, meaning they are compatible with a wider range of equipment and are more likely to survive equipment or operating environment stresses and malfunctions.

Medical Device Industry

Active implantable medical devices require small, efficient and long-lasting batteries to promote the health and well being of patients. The JBT  solid-state battery offers a long-term and cost-effective solution for the medical device industry, while providing varied size and energy output options.

JBT technology has the potential for up to three times the industry standard energy density, meaning the same amount of energy as today’s batteries can be stored in a smaller space and ultimately reduce device size. This high energy density allows for micro-applications that are  critical for medical devices. These solid-state batteries can also be formed with curvature to fit any application.

Because battery life is another critical concern for the medical device industry, JBT has worked to develop a longer-lasting battery than traditional lithium-ion. The solid-state technology is designed to last for several years, resulting in a cost-effective, lower-maintenance solution for active implantable devices.

While the current JBT battery is rechargeable, JBT is also working on a technology that will allow for inductive or remote charging. This will eliminate the need for patients to undergo invasive medical procedures to recharge the device.

JBT technology is designed to manage thermal runaway, preventing batteries from short circuiting and overheating. Devices powered by JBT batteries are safer and more reliable than current technologies on the market.

The JBT batteries are also designed to last through various hi-temp industrial processes, such as autoclave and pasteurization, which are important for several industries, including medical devices.

Automotive Industry

As consumers have an increasing interest in Electric Vehicles (EV), the automotive industry is changing. The JBT batteries have the potential for significantly higher miles per charge than current EV batteries. In addition, automotive battery explosions can cause severe injury and even death. The JBT solid-state battery technology is transforming the future of electric car safety and feasibility. Because solid-state batteries are made with no liquid or gel electrolytes, they protect against risk of fire or explosion.

Wearables Industry

Because JBT technologies are being designed for high energy density, they can potentially be made very small while storing the same amount of energy as conventional batteries.
